Lastly, “social distancing” does not mean relational distancing! Say hi, let us know how you’re doing, let us know how we’re doing, or send any questions to [email protected].
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
How do we cultivate the fruit of self-control?
Don’t just try, train!
1 Timothy 4:7b
train yourself to be godly.
1 Corinthians 9:23-27
23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
1 Corinthians 10:11-13
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Self-control is the steady capacity to direct yourself to accomplish what you have chosen or decided to do and be, even though you “don’t feel like it.”
1. Vision: Keep the main thing, the main thing.
1 Corinthians 9:24-25
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
1 Corinthians 9:23
I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
2. Intention: Honor God with Your Body.
1 Corinthians 9:26-27
26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3. Means: To change we need to practice specific soul-training exercises as God’s means of grace.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
1 Corinthians 10:12
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Ways to Learn and Grow
We know that many of you are seeking ways to listen, learn and grow in this season. As a church community, we believe the gospel is good news that tears down walls and builds bridges. Our faith in Jesus leads us to intentionally build bridges across ethnic, cultural, economic, and gender barriers. There is more work to do, and we have not arrived, but as disciples of Jesus we have and will continue to learn and work against any and all forms of racism, racial injustice and violence, in Jesus’ name. Click HERE for a list of resources and ways you can grow and
learn with us.
