Passage and Notes - January 17, 2021

The Power of Petition

Prayer is connecting, communicating and collaborating with God.

Petition: Asking God to meet our needs.

How do we experience the power of petition?

Matthew 6:11
Give us today our daily bread.

Mark 10:46-52
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man,“Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

1. Be intentional and specific with Jesus.

Mark 12:47-48
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

2. Recognize petition moves us toward Jesus.

Mark 12:49-50
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man,“Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

“To pray in the name of Jesus means asking for things that are consistent with his character and aligned with his purpose…Praying in the name of Jesus means wanting what God wants, aligning our wills with his will, our words with his Word, and our personal preferences with his eternal and universal purposes. It also speaks of family privilege. To ask in the name of Jesus is to approach the Father in the company of his own dear Son.”
– Pete Greig

“To ask in the name of Jesus is to ask for what Jesus has taught us to request. To ask for our own convenience or out of our own self-interest, and certainly to ask in a spirit of anger or competition with others, is not to ask in the name of Jesus, and therefore it is not a prayer that will be answered. For this reason the Lord’s Prayer was so important in the devotions of the ancient church and has continued to be so throughout the ages. Our God is not a parent spoiling children by giving them all that they ask. Our God, like a good parent with small children, certainly gives us what we ask for but only when it is for our own good and the good of all creation.”
– Justo Gonzalez

3. Trust that petition transforms lives.

Mark 12:52
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Ways to Learn and Grow
We know that many of you are seeking ways to listen, learn and grow in this season. As a church community, we believe the gospel is good news that tears down walls and builds bridges. Our faith in Jesus leads us to intentionally build bridges across ethnic, cultural, economic, and gender barriers. There is more work to do, and we have not arrived, but as disciples of Jesus we have and will continue to learn and work against any and all forms of racism, racial injustice and violence, in Jesus’ name. learn with us.
