Matt’s Blog: Flood Update and FAQs

Flood Family,

I hope you were able to join us on Tuesday night for our online Flood Family Meeting! It is always encouraging and energizing to see so many familiar names participating and interacting online.

If you weren’t able to join us live, don’t worry! We recorded the meeting, and you can catch up here. You can also read below to get an update on what’s in store for our community in this next season.

Our big news is we are celebrating 20 years of fruitful ministry this October! Please save the date for the weekend of October 23-25 as we commemorate and celebrate God’s faithfulness to us and through us these past two decades. And please update your contact information at so we can send you a personal invitation to our anniversary weekend events! Scroll down to see the 20th anniversary weekend celebration schedule.

We are grateful for each of you as we seek to live out God’s calling to be a Christ-centered movement of hope & healing here in San Diego and beyond.

Together on the Journey,

When will we begin meeting in person again?

While some churches in San Diego have been able to begin meeting in person in a limited fashion, that option isn’t currently available to us as the San Diego Unified School District and Kearny High School remain closed. We are in frequent contact with the district about when that might change, and we will communicate any updates to you!

For now, we are continuing to have our worship gatherings online at 9am, 11am, and 7pm every Sunday at or We appreciate your participation in those Sunday gatherings! While we are thankful for the technology that makes that possible, we also recognize the unique challenges of not being together. That’s why, beginning Sunday, September 27, we’re launching an outdoor, in person gathering for fellowship and encouragement! We’re calling it:

Flood Face Time
Friends. Fellowship. Fun.
Beginning Sunday, September 27 at Mission Bay 4pm
(exact location coming soon!)

We’re so excited for this opportunity to be together! We will schedule these Flood Face Times a month at a time, and adjust accordingly to COVID guidelines and rental facility availability.

In addition to our in person Flood Face Time gatherings, we also have meaningful opportunities to participate in groups! We have a variety of in-person and online Flood Groups to choose from. In fact, over 70% of our groups are offering some kind of in person and online hybrid, so this is a perfect time to get connected with community at Flood! Join a group today at

How is the church doing financially right now?

We just finished our fiscal year, which runs from September to August. Despite the uncertainty and challenges that the Coronavirus created, we are grateful to say that we ended the year with a surplus! Thank you so much!

Annual Revenue: $ 2,428,656.79
Annual Expenses: $ 2,066,760.35
Surplus: $ 361,896.44

This surplus is thanks to your faithful and consistent giving and investment in what God has called us to do as a church family, coupled with a 20% reduction in expenses due to not paying rental fees at our Sunday worship spaces and the wise financial stewardship of our staff.

A portion of this surplus will be applied to building expenses. We also set aside $200,000 in an emergency fund.

While much is uncertain, what is certain is God’s faithfulness and provision! Everything we do at Flood is because of the faithfulness of you, God’s people. We commit to continue to seek to be wise and discerning with the finances the Lord has entrusted to us.

What is happening with our building project?

Construction on our new church home has begun! I have an onsite meeting with our construction team every Tuesday morning to get an update on the work being done, which is currently all pre-inspection work that is getting us closer to our goal of moving into our building and using it for God’s glory and for the sake of others. ! I’m grateful for the significant progress being made over the past two weeks! There are two parts of our building plans that still need city approval: the structural plan and the mechanical plan. Revisions to those plans were submitted this Wednesday, and we’re hopeful they will be approved soon!

As a side note, there has been an employee at the city who has been uniquely gracious and helpful to us as we’ve navigated this challenging process. His name is Emmanuel! He has been there for us when we’ve needed him, and we’re so thankful for him.

The tentative completion date of the project is late spring 2021. We will keep you updated as that date gets solidified.

We are so grateful for those faithfully fulfilling their pledges and who have given one-time gifts to the HOME Campaign. In October we will be re-launching our HOME Campaign to invite greater participation in hopes of raising $1,350,000. If you are newer to Flood or have not yet made a pledge, please prayerfully consider an 18 month pledge and/or one-time gift to be given by Sunday, October 25th. You can make your pledge or give at
